Story

An excited Gokuu and Kuririn run through the crowd outside trying to find their friends. Gokuu asks to stand on a man's head, and with this better view, Gokuu spots them. Meanwhile, Blooma says that she tried to visit Gokuu, but there was nothing on the Turtle Hermit's island. He explains that he moved for training, and then requests a pafupafu, for old time's sake. But Blooma whacks him over the head with a large mallet. Gokuu then arrives, and he and Oolong happily greet each other. Gokuu explains that he met up with Yamcha already, and then introduces Kuririn to the group. Gokuu then says that the two of them and Yamcha all passed, and everyone is happy for them. But the PA system calls for the eight entrants to come to the temple's main building, so Gokuu and Kuririn leave the group. Oolong then wonders where the old man went.

Gokuu, Kuririn, and Yamcha wait inside the building with the other competitors. When a giant, slobbering, overweight man shows up, Gokuu's dog-like nose goes insane, because the man smells so horrible. Yamcha explains that that guy hasn't taken a bath since birth, and he uses his strong stench to distract opponents. A man in a suit wearing sunglasses then arrives with a clipboard, and he calls everyone over. Except for the smelly man, who needs to step back. This man in sunglasses, an announcer, points to a chart on the wall and explains that they'll draw numbers to determine opponents and match order. So everyone must come draw a number when their name is called. An old man grabs a young woman by the arm, asking if he can get matched up with her, but the announcer refuses.

First the announcer calls up "Namu-san," a tall man with a turban. He draws #6, putting him in the third match. Next is "Monster Giran-san," a large dinosaur-like person. He draws #8, for the fourth match. Next comes "Bacterian-san," the large smelly man. He draws #2, for the first match. Next is Yamcha, who gets #3, for the second match. Next is Kuririn, who gets #1, putting him in the first match against Bacterian. Kuririn doesn't like that at all. Next is "MAGO Gosora-san," but no one responds. Yamcha looks over the chart and suggests those characters actually read as "SON Gokuu." Embarrassed, the announcer now asks for Gokuu. He gets #7, putting him in the fourth match against Giran. Next is "Lanfan-san," the attractive young woman, and then "Jackie Chun-san," the old man.

Now the announcer will go over the rules. Falling from the ring or saying you give up constitutes a loss. However, hitting in the eyes or attacking sensitive areas is forbidden. Gokuu doesn't know what "sensitive area" means, so the announcer bluntly tells him it refers to testicles. Lanfan says she doesn't have those. The announcer then tells them to wait here until the matches begin, but Gokuu says he wants lunch. The announcer asks if he wouldn't rather eat afterwards, but Gokuu insists on eating now. Gokuu asks Kuririn if he wants to eat too, but he's not in the mood for food, so Gokuu chows down by himself.

The announcer then stands outside in the ring with a microphone, where he greets the crowd and announces that the 21st World's Best Martial Arts Fest will now begin. The first match: Kuririn versus Bacterian. The second match: Yamcha versus Jackie Chun. The third match: Lanfan versus Namu. The fourth match: SON Gokuu versus Giran.

Continuity

The events of this chapter are depicted in Dragon Ball 21. However, part of the scene involving Blooma, Oolong, and Puer's reintroduction was repurposed in Dragon Ball 19, and thus many related events are altered or nonexistent in the anime. These episodes first aired approximately 11 months after this chapter was first published. Anime-original material includes a scene with the Turtle Hermit attempting to bribe Blooma with souvenirs. Some material surrounding Blooma, Oolong, and Puer was altered or removed, due to their earlier reintroduction in the anime. Also, most of the numbers drawn are switched around in the anime, without changing any of the match-ups. The new numbers line up with the order of the names shown on complete charts in the manga.

Cast

There are also numerous other people, including spectators and Martial Arts Fest officials.

Setting

The events of this chapter take place at the World's Best Martial Arts Fest grounds, primarily inside the Martial Arts Temple Main Building, but with scenes outside and at the Fighting Stage as well.

This chapter takes place during Age 750, immediately after the events of the previous chapter.
