Act 17, Reorganization

April 1st, 2011

Finally making a news section for this project! I’ve rearranged the navigation a little, in preparation for further sections. Although I wouldn’t expect to see new sections anytime soon, since certain other projects are higher priority right now. More importantly, I’ve added something new: Act 17! It’s Calaveras time! I’m hoping to average one chapter a month for the rest of the year, while I prioritize other things. No guarantees, but think positive!

Starting with Act 17, I’m trying to be a bit less literal, just to the point that things sound less stiff, and more like natural English. Things should be just as accurate as they’ve always been, if not moreso (due to my very gradually increasing proficiency over the years). I fully intend to keep most honorific suffixes, but I’m trying to come up with alternatives to certain ones (namely “Motoki-oniisan” and “Makoto-senpai”). I don’t like to omit things, but I don’t want to be too Wapanese either. But everything that isn’t translated should be italicized now (though I haven’t gone through the older acts thoroughly yet). And on a similar note, I’ve changed around a few font styles (especially the “thinking” one), mostly to better match the different fonts in the books.

Name/Term Spellings

April 1st, 2011

Minor update today. I’ve made a page detailing some of my spelling preferences. It’s not complete (only covers characters that have appeared in new/updated summaries), but I’ve been meaning to do this for a long time. It’s kind of necessary just for personal reference, but maybe you’ll enjoy seeing my reasoning too. This is definitely going to be updated a lot as I work on updating/creating more summaries. I was hoping to have another chunk of those ready today too, but things just didn’t work out that way.

(If you want to know a secret, a lot of the stuff in that page was pulled directly from my old DB “Articles” project that I took down years ago. I’d be shocked if anyone remembers it.)

Makafushigi Birthday Adventure

February 27th, 2011

Since I’ve missed a lot of other important anniversaries, I wanted to do something nice for the 25th anniversary of the first episode of Dragon Ball. But due to my poor time management skills, I only came up with the final idea a few days ago: a summary page for the very first Dragon Ball movie. It’s not as complete as I would like, but I’d hardly call it a rush job either. This is the first new summary I’ve done since 2004, and there are many, many words. (3,593 to be exact.) So for me, it’s a big deal in more ways than one. But I plan to add a little more to it in the very near future (possibly some screen captures?), along with some templates for the other movies. Right now I just need to upload this as is before (my) midnight.

I’d love to do more movie summaries in the near future, but right now my highest priority is cleaning up the old manga summaries. Ideally there will be more updates to those soon, but I don’t want to make any promises eight days before a new Pokemon release.

Actual End of the Decade

December 21st, 2010

2010 is almost over, and though I haven’t accomplished nearly as much on the site as I’d planned, I think it has been my busiest year since 2004. Maybe 2011 will be even more productive, but I don’t like to make promises.

I recently started using PHP everywhere, although so far, there haven’t been any interesting new features because of it. It removed the need for JavaScript on the main page, and made a couple of server-side things more convenient for me, but that’s about it. Maybe I’ll try something fancy later. But most pages have a new filename because of it, so there could be some errors or broken links. I think I’ve accounted for all of them, but tell me if you do find any.

I’ve made lots of blog posts, most of them forgettable, and there are many more unwritten ones to cover the near the future. The news makes me want to write lots of political rants, but I fear that would alienate more people than my WWE or 90210 posts already do. I also continue to chug along through old Dragon Ball content, at a theoretically much better rate than I had been, thanks to making lots of template pages. (That was the “big but not really” update I’d previously mentioned.)

More things will happen if and when they happen.

Big/Small Manga and Anime Updates

November 28th, 2010

A relatively large update today, but most of it is meaningless to people who aren’t me. I did finish the summary pages for the first training arc, but after that, you’ll also find a lot of incomplete template pages for the subsequent chapters (32 and up) and episodes (DB 19 and up). Nothing on those template pages is finalized or confirmed; they mostly exist for my personal convenience. But they’ll also make future updates much easier and faster. It’s also worth noting that they contain nearly all the Dragon Ball content that was on the previous version of the site, which means nearly everything is here now, and that old mess has been rendered mostly obsolete.

There have also been some technical changes that results in a lot of new URLs, but everything should theoretically redirect automatically. You can read more about it on the site’s main page in the near future, and let me know if anything’s horribly broken.

Tweak and Tweet Collection

August 7th, 2010

Wow, it’s already August now. 2010 is running away. But I’ve made a handful of minor updates to the main pages, mostly within the menus. I tried to do something slightly bigger that would have affected everything positively, but by the time I nearly got it working properly, I noticed it doesn’t work in IE8 (it’s only CSS2!), so I just scrapped it all. I might try again when IE9 goes public.

Also, I’m ready to debut the Twitter account I’ve made for the site. Actually, it’s been around for a while, but time passed, and I didn’t get around to it until now. Much of it is auto-posted by scripts and magic (isn’t it enough that I write the RSS feeds by hand in text editors!?), but if I gain followers to converse with, then I will get a little more personal with it. If you like Twitter, feel free to follow and force me to become more social.

And in other news, I’m currently working on a very large Dragon Ball update. Unfortunately, it’s only structurally large; it will have very little new content with it. Keyword being “new,” so feel free to speculate, if it isn’t already obvious. You’ll see soon enough, either way.

Happy Birthday, Kuririn

June 3rd, 2010

25 years ago today, the 25th chapter of Dragon Ball was published in WJ #25. It featured the debut of Kuririn. I’ve decided to celebrate Kuririn’s 25th birthday by re-adding the relevant chapters and episode. I wish I could have done more, but I’m also celebrating someone else’s 25th birthday today. Eight years ago, that someone celebrated their 17th birthday by summarizing up to Volume 17 of the manga. Such youthful energy fades fast, apparently.

April Fool’s?

May 14th, 2010

The previous update could have been an April Fool’s joke, or it could have been the truth. I’m not even sure myself anymore. Anyway, I ended up not changing hosts, so there was no downtime after all. I also tweaked the layout a little more, but I don’t even remember how much of that is noticeable or had already been online. I guess it doesn’t really matter. There are things about it I’d like to change, but there are more things to worry about right now.

Blog posting kind of slowed down because I’d been busy with not only addictive videogames, but Dragon Ball content as well. I made a Dragon Ball-specific news feed for it, in case that’s all you’re interested in. I’ll likely do the same for other sections (in other words, Sailor Moon) the next time I update them.

All this tiny updating was not easy, because my FTP program doesn’t get along with my spazzy mouse at all.

Manga and Anime Updates, Guidebook Rearrangement

May 14th, 2010

Long time no update! First of all, I’ve edited and added a lot to the manga and anime summaries, enough that both are completely up through the entire first story arc. I’ve changed my mind about a lot of translations (or lack thereof) since last time, so there’s also that.

I’ve also moved and consolidated all of the guidebook translations, so now there are less pages total, but more scrolling and more angry dialup users. In the end, I think it’s much easier for everyone, including me. But there is nothing new there, aside from one or two typos I happened to notice and correct. I haven’t even updated any of my name/term preferences to my current ones, because there are some other translation issues to fix as well, and the entire project is currently on-hold indefinitely. My motivation to finish it recently dropped a few notches, for probably obvious reasons if you view other Dragon Ball websites, but I certainly have not given up yet.

Oh, and I’ve made an RSS feed for easier tracking of updates. Hooray for modern web technology!

Oops

April 1st, 2010

I’ve been too busy playing addictive videogames to work on anything. Sorry.
